Day 13: Cooking Class in Athens

Cooking Class in Athens

After the usual morning we had our final activity, which was a cooking lesson. Many dishes were prepared. From spinach pie, filled eggplant, etc. Before making the dishes we went to the Greek meat market and saw vendor selling all types of meat, which was hard for me since we saw dead animals, but it showed me what reality was really like not all sunshines and rainbows. Making all the food made me realize how much time, and effort goes into making a particular food. The food we made I bought a few days prior so it made me realize the interaction wasn’t just transnational. There was a story and time that was spent making it. It humbled me and made me more self aware.

Unfortunate, Day 13 was the last day to taste of Greek culture. We had an amazing cook teacher who showed us how to make traditional Greek food. From generation to generation, there’s been great cooks in my family. However, I’ve always been the exception. If it wasn’t for the kind support of my cooking partners, I would have not been able to make such delicious lunch. We also visited the meat and fish market. Visiting these places placed me back in the Dominican Republic. I remembered going to these markets with my family and buying food for the day. It was a melancholic moment for me. I never thought of Greece would have places like this when I was back in Lowell.  I learned sheep and goat are the main best selling meats in the market. Usually the prices get lower during the night.
